Why I set a reading goal this year

Why did I set this goal? Well, I have a few ongoing goals that I focus on all year. I typically set writing goals, health focused goals, etc. I have even set a simple ‘read more’ goal in the past. I read a lot of non-fiction books to learn about things such as Hygge, read someone’s inspiring journey, learn how to manage my time better, etc. As much as I love books and admire so many authors…I rarely dedicate time to reading fiction. So why set a reading goal now?

Besides the obvious of wanting to read more fiction, I wanted a goal that was realistic for me personally; 26 books of about 300 pages each in a year’s time is about 25 pages a day…I can do that! I also find reading relaxing and it fits into my self-care focus.

Reading actually reduces anxiety, relieves stress, and can easily calm my racing mind after a hectic day. There are actual studies that have proven the benefits of novel reading and it certainly makes me feel better! There is even Bibliotherapy – a therapeutic approach that uses literature to support positive mental wellbeing.

Reading is therapeutic to me and after reading several studies, I think most people could benefit from reading more. Whenever I read, it’s a tiny escape and even a distraction. To read a few pages a day allows me to unwind, decompress, relax and recharge. So this is more than a simple read more goal for me, it’s a way to focus on my wellbeing and take care of myself!

I have a shelf of books I have wanted to read, but haven’t yet. I will also be asking for reading suggestions and visiting my local library to pick up suggestions there as well!

My first read (in no particular order) is Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I bought this book about two years ago at a book store that was going out of business and the store owner pointed out that she purchased it for the shop because it was the book that the main character chased after in the movie Serendipity…I loved that movie and the book was priced so reasonably how could I NOT buy it!?
